Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier whose passion for ancient Greece led him to travel to the country in 1776 accompanied by an entourage of prominent artists and scholars. His monumental publication was received with enthusiasm in France. Gouffier was granted membership to the Académie Française and subsequently became the Ambassador of Constantinople.
